The University of Michigan House Officers Association is celebrating over 30 years representing the House Officers at the University of Michigan.
Residents at the University of Michigan organized themselves into the Interns-Residents Association in the late 1960's with the dual mission of improving working conditions for house officers and addressing patient care issues. In February 1973 the Supreme Court granted the Residents at the University of Michigan employee status under the Michigan Public Employee Relations Act (PERA) and the House Officers obtained the right to negotiate collectively with the University of Michigan.
The first contract was ratified later that year. In the past 25 years, the University of Michigan House Officers Association (HOA) has continued to advance the cause of residents and address issues affecting their patients.
Each year, 10 representatives from a variety of disciplines are elected to the Executive Board.
The Executive Board is the governing body of the Association, responsible for the policy, project, and financial
decisions made by the Association. The Board members, as specified by the organization's constitution and bylaws,
serve on and are responsible for appointing representatives to over 30 major governing committees of the University
of Michigan Health System. In addition, the Board is often called upon to assist in projects initiated by the
Institution; address individual house officers needs, and serve in other ways.
